  • Obiettivi: General relativity and the weak field approximation. The transverse-traceless gauge. Interaction of gravitational waves (GWs) with test masses. The energy of GWs. Generation of GWs in linearized theory: mass quadrupole radiation. Astrophysical sources of GWs. The GW stochastic background. Experimental observation of GW emission in compact binaries. Experiments for the detection of GWs. Resonant and interferometric detectors. Data analysis techniques: general concepts. Insight into GW interferometry: geometrical optics, low order aberrations, lasers and Gaussian beams, the Michelson interferometer. Practical experiences on Michelson interferometry. Insight into the data analysis problematics and tecniques for the search of continuous and impulsive GW signals. Instrumental background characterization, matched filtering, statistical approach to data analysis. Practical experience: search for impulsive GW signals into a set of simulated data: matched filter characterization of data in terms of SNR gain, detection efficiency, estimation of the error in the time of arrival, characterization of background, application of selection threshold, study of foreground
