  • Obiettivi: Among the natural disasters or catastrophes we can list earthquakes, floodings, tsunami, landslides. The most important chapters to investigate and to deal with are: knowledge of the single risk, including the possible disaster connected, prevention activity, preparation activity (to the disaster), behaviour during the disaster, management of the emergency after the disaster. It is possible to imagine that such a preparedness could lead to more ambitious programme, considering special prevention activities as well as maintenance programme for the structures potentially involved in the disaster management. During the course some visit on site could be expected to give more emphasis to practical and professional experience. A student can improve his or her chance of surviving a natural disaster if they understand the concepts, are able to recognize warning signs, understand underlying factors, know what to do to reduce the impact before disaster strikes and also how to react during and after the disaster. These concepts are conveyed to students through qualitative learning. The introduction of the typical natural disaster case study helps the students to understand the mechanism of the starting and developing of the events. Understanding mitigation activities will reduce disaster risks, and being prepared will reduce loss of life and property when disasters strike. If this can be achieved, it will improve sustainability.
