  • Prerequisiti: High-school knowledge of Physics and Mathematics.
  • Obiettivi: The primary objective of the General Chemistry course is to give the student a solid foundation in both theoretical and descriptive chemistry. Special emphasis will be placed on development of problem solving skills as well as on the application of basic chemical concepts (written examination with the solution of 6-7 problems). Acquire a thorough understanding of the modern theory of atomic structure and atomic level phenomena. Learn the organization and information conveyed by the periodic table of the chemical elements. Obtain a thorough introduction to modern chemical bonding theories (VB, VSEPR and MO) and their implications. Begin to learn the symbolism and terminology (i.e. the basic languages) of chemistry. Begin to learn and categorize selected types of chemical reactions (acids/bases; strong, weak and non-electrolytes; redox reactions). Understand the quantitative implications of chemical formulas and chemical reactions, including processes occurring in solution. Use the Ideal Gas Law to calculate density and molecular weight of a gas. Use the gas laws in chemical stoichiometric calculations. Solve homogeneous and heterogeneous equilibria problems. State the definition of acid and base according to Arrhenius, Br?nsted and Lewis. Give the conjugate base for any acid or the conjugate acid for any base. Solve problems using ionization constants, concentrations and pH or pOH for weak acids, weak bases, buffer solutions. Describe the hydrolysis of salts, and the preparation of a buffer. Use the solubility product to solve for ion concentrations in solution. Determine ion concentrations when a common ion is present. Understand how solutes alter the properties of solutions and practical applications of such modifications. Understand the various forms of energy and the various roles energy plays in physical processes and chemical systems and reactions. Discuss entropy and the Second Law of Thermodynamics. Define free energy and relate it to equilibrium. Discuss the effect of temperature on chemical equilibria. Draw a galvanic cell, by identifying the anode and cathode. Write half reactions for galvanic cells and calculate EMFs using the Nernst equation.
