Prerequisiti: Basics of condensed-matter physics and electromagnetic interactions.
Obiettivi: The course aims at providing a multidisciplinary approach to the characterization of Cultural Heritage, having physical techniques as the heart, yet of possible interest for other STEM students. The course is structured as follows: How to characterize cultural heritage. Historical notes. Principles of non-invasiveness and non-destructiveness. Notes on atomic and molecular structure. Notes on radiation-matter interaction. Optical probes. The electromagnetic spectrum and IR, Raman, UV-VIS, X-ray diffraction, and fluorescence techniques. Neutron techniques: neutron diffraction, neutron activation analysis, vibrational spectroscopy. Other nuclear techniques: muon spectroscopy and tomography, dating through nuclear decays. Examples of recent literature and laboratory experience.
